Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is a widely recognized disorder. Common symptoms are pain in the wrist and hand after extended periods of repetitive motion, such as typing at a computer. The pain is typically caused by compression of the median nerve in the confines of the wrist.
Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS) can also cause hand and wrist pain. TOS is the result of inflamed muscles in the neck or shoulder that pressure the median nerve. Even though the site of compression in TOS is in the neck or arm, the pain is often felt in the hand and wrist - identical to CTS.
Many people with these disorders are misdiagnosed and unnecessarily subjected to treatments such as surgery, cortisol injections, painkillers and muscle relaxants. Each of these treatments has common side effects and often do not provide long-term relief.
The more I learn about the body, the more I find holistic, non-invasive ways to promote healing and wellness. I’m happy to report that a growing body of research shows how Massage Therapy is able to provide relief from CTS and TOS. It is worth mentioning that Massage Therapy has virtually no side effects.
In January 2012 I will be conducting a case study to explore the impact of bodywork on Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Please contact me for a free assessment!
